The project screen
What happens when you open a project, the left sidebar, and what to do when you lose your connection.
Open a project
Click a project on the dashboard to open it. While Murfy prepares the project, you see a progress message:
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Preparing project... | The project is being prepared. A count such as (3/10) and a progress bar can appear |
| Preparing project... (queue position: N) | Your project is waiting in line |
| Downloading project... | The project's files are being downloaded. A count and a progress bar can appear |
| Optimizing project... | The project is being optimized |
When the project is ready, the editor opens the file you edited most recently. If you haven't edited any file yet, it opens the main document. The project also compiles once automatically. See Compile and PDF.
Archived and missing projects
- Archived project: archived projects can't be edited. You return to the dashboard and see a dialog. If you're the owner, click
Confirmto go to your archived projects, where you can restore it. See Manage your projects. - Project not found: the project may have been deleted, or you may not have access to it. You return to the dashboard.

If you lose your connection
If your connection drops, your work stays in the editor and syncs when the connection returns.
- A cloud icon appears next to the file name. Hover over it for details. When the connection returns and syncing finishes, it turns green for a moment ("Reconnected and finished syncing.") and then disappears.
- If your internet is down for about 3 seconds, a notice appears: "You are offline." Your work is still here and syncs when you're back online.
- Changes that haven't synced are lost if you open another file or close the window. While you have unsynced changes, other files can't be opened.
- While you have unsynced changes, you are asked to confirm before you leave the page. If you use your browser's back or forward button, Murfy asks "Some changes haven't been saved to the server. Leaving this page may lose them. Leave anyway?" If you close or reload the page, or leave through the Murfy logo or
History, your browser shows its own confirmation.
Stay on the file until the connection returns.
Tutorial
New users see a short tour the first time they open a project. It points out the editor, the Compile button, the compiled PDF, and Murfy AI. Other users see slides about recently released features instead. A guide appears automatically at most once per visit.
To see the tour again, open Tutorial & Shortcuts and click Take the tour again. What's new opens the feature slides. See Tutorial.
