History

Compare versions of your project, and restore or download an earlier one.

History: see who changed what, when, and where, and restore your project or files

  1. Open History
  2. Compare versions side by side in split view
  3. Restore a project (Restore project)
  4. Restore a file (Restore file)

Open History

Click History at the top of the editor. The button appears only if you can edit the project, so people with view access don't see it. To return to the editor, click Go to editor.

Version history

The Version history timeline shows the versions of your project as cards. The oldest version is on the left and the newest is on the right. Each card shows the date and time and who made changes. Scroll sideways to see older versions. If you've scrolled away from the newest version, click Jump to latest to return to it.

Compare two versions

  1. Hover over a version card and click L or R. L sets the left side of the comparison and R sets the right side.
  2. Select a file in the Files list on the left to see its differences.

By default, the two newest versions are selected. The left version is always older than the right one.

The comparison shows the two versions side by side. The header above each side shows L or R and the file path.

  • Hover over a change to see who made it and when, for example "{name} added at {time}". Changes that came from a restore say so.
  • Only text files have their content compared. For other files, hover over them in the list to see "Only text files have content history".
  • If the selected file doesn't exist in one of the versions, that side says "Selected file does not exist in this version."

Move between changes

Click Go to changes above or Go to changes below, or press the up and down arrow keys.

Restore an earlier version

Restore the whole project

  1. On a version card, click More, then choose Restore a project to this version.
  2. In the confirmation dialog, click Restore project.

The whole project returns to that version. Only text files are restored. Files such as images keep their current state. Your current state is also saved in the history, so you can go back if you need to. When it finishes, the editor opens.

Restore one file

  1. Select the file and click Restore file in the header of the side you want to restore from. The left side restores the left version, and the right side restores the right version.
  2. In the confirmation dialog, click Restore file.

Only that file is restored. Your current state is saved in the history here too. If a file with the same name already exists, you see "A file with the same name already exists. Please rename the existing file and try again."

Download a version

  1. On a version card, click More, then choose Download.
  2. Read the confirmation and click Download.

You get the project at that version as a .zip file. Files such as images are included with their latest content, because past versions of them aren't stored.

If you don't see the full history

If your plan doesn't include the full version history, you see only part of it. A card at the oldest (left) end of the timeline invites you to upgrade to the Pro plan for the entire history. Click upgrade to the Pro plan on the card to open the plans screen. This card can't be selected for comparison. To compare plans, see the Pricing page.
