Murfy MCP
Connect Murfy to AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor so they can work on your paper projects.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for AI tools to work directly with other apps. When you connect Murfy MCP, the AI tool you already use can read and edit the files in your Murfy projects and even compile them.
- Available on every plan, including the free Starter plan.
- Nothing to install.
Connect
- In Murfy, go to your profile picture at the top right of the dashboard →
Setting→Connected apps. - Copy the address under Connect a new app.
- Paste it where your AI tool lets you add an MCP server (custom connector).
- When the AI tool opens a Murfy page, review it and click
Allow.
Each AI tool adds MCP servers in a different place. See each tool's official guide.
| Tool | Official guide |
|---|---|
| Claude (web and desktop app) | Custom connectors |
| ChatGPT | Connect from ChatGPT |
| Cursor | MCP |
| Claude Code | MCP |
It also works with VS Code.
Setup guide in Murfy
Murfy has its own MCP setup page with steps for each AI tool. It opens without logging in. To open it:
- Click your profile picture at the top right of the dashboard and choose
MCP setup. - Choose
MCP setupin the left sidebar of the Announcements and Murfy guide pages. - Go to
Setting→Connected appsand clickSee setup steps for each AI.
The page has these parts:
- MCP URL: a copy field for the address to add to your AI tool.
- Or let your AI do it: a ready-made request you can copy and paste into Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor.
- Steps for each tool: tabs for Antigravity, ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and VS Code. Claude is selected first.
- What you can ask: example requests.
- If something doesn't work: common problems and what to do.
Steps for each tool
Every tab has three steps: add Murfy to the tool, sign in on the Murfy page that opens, and choose Allow. How you add it depends on the tool.
| Tool | How you add Murfy |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT, Claude | Add a custom connector and paste the MCP URL |
| Claude Code, Codex | Run the command shown on the page in your terminal |
| Antigravity, Cursor, VS Code | Add the settings shown on the page to the tool's MCP settings file |
Each tab also links to the tool's own guide, Where to add it in the tool. If your AI isn't listed, any AI that supports MCP can connect. Add the MCP URL in its MCP or connector settings, then sign in and choose Allow. After you allow access, the AI shows up in Connected apps.
What you can ask
| Example | What the AI does |
|---|---|
| Bring in new results | Reads results in your experiment folder, updates a table and a plot, and compiles. Works from Claude Code or Cursor, where your experiment files are |
| Fit a page limit | Compiles to count the pages, trims wordy text, and compiles again until it fits |
| Check before you submit | Reads your .tex files and refs.bib and reports what it finds. Nothing in your project changes |
| Add related work | Adds BibTeX entries to refs.bib and writes a paragraph in your related work section |
The page also suggests mentioning the project name and asking the AI to show changes before it edits them. Files the AI deletes can be restored from History.
If something doesn't work
| Problem | What the page says |
|---|---|
| I can't add a custom connector | Each AI app decides who can add connectors. On some plans only an organization owner or admin can. Ask them, or open that tool's setup guide |
| The sign-in page doesn't open | Most AI apps also show the sign-in link in their window or terminal. Copy it and open it in your browser |
| I connected the wrong Murfy account | Disconnect it in Connected apps, then connect again from the AI. On the Murfy page, choose Switch account before you allow access |
| The AI doesn't use Murfy | Some AI apps turn connectors on per chat. You can also name Murfy in your request |
| The AI can't find my project | Archived projects are left out unless you ask for them. The AI only sees projects you are a member of, so check that you connected the right account |
| My changes are refused | You are a Viewer on that project. The AI can read and compile it, but only owners and editors can change files |
| The AI asks me to sign in again | Connections end after 30 days without use, or when you disconnect them. Sign in from the AI again and choose Allow |
What to check before you allow
Before you click Allow, Murfy shows you:
- Which tool is asking to connect, and where the request came from. If the source can't be verified, it says "Unverified app".
- Which Murfy account you're connecting. To use a different account, click
Switch account. - What the tool will be able to do:
- See your projects and their files
- Read file contents
- Create, edit, move, and delete files
- Run compiles and read the results
This tool acts as you. It only reaches projects you already have access to, and it can't change anything in projects where you're a viewer.
Manage connections
Under Connections in Setting → Connected apps, you can see each connected tool, when it was connected, and when it was last used.
- Disconnect: click
Disconnectnext to a tool to cut off its access right away. Nothing in your projects changes. - Expired: if a connection isn't used for 30 days, it's signed out and marked
Expired. Connect again from that tool to keep using it. UseRemoveto clear expired entries from the list.
Good to know
- Changes made by an AI tool go into your document right away, as if you had typed them, and your co-authors see them too. If you want to check first, ask the tool to show you the changes before making them.
- Deleted files can be restored from History.
